Are you looking to offer your music expertise to lower income students?

Many low income school districts have taken great pride in offering excellent music programs and are looking for well qualified music teachers. Find out if there are any such districts near where you live.

There are several music foundations that actively reach out to low income families and professional music teachers like you can teach for a reduced price. Here are some for reference:

How can I get my school to start a music program?

The best ways to get a school to start a music program if it doesn’t have one is by doing one or more of the following:

  • convince the community to vote for bonds that cover music education
  • petition the school boards to fund music programs
  • lobby the principals

Showing examples of how other school districts have thriving music programs, showcasing awards etc. can help convince the local community and the school districts.

What music programs or opportunities are available for lower income students?

The best way for lower income students to get into music is through their local public schools. There are many low income school districts that have taken great pride in offering excellent music programs. They hire well qualified music teachers, offer inexpensive instrument rentals and connect students to reduced price private lessons, not to mention providing free accessories and uniforms for marching bands. The biggest challenge to these programs is of course availability of funds.

In addition to Music Thrives Foundation, there are several music foundations that actively reach out to low income families and provide them access to professional music teachers who may teach for a reduced price. Here are some for reference:

Some instruments are expensive. Where can I get discounted music instruments?

Discounted music instruments may be found on ecommerce sites that sell previously owned instruments. Used instruments may or may not be in a good shape and there is nothing worse that discourages kids from continuing to play music than a bad instrument. Several schools, especially those in low-income districts, offer inexpensive instrument rentals. Many musical stores offer a rent to buy program that allows you to rent a new instrument for a low rate per month. Then down the road, you have the option to buy it, with the money you already paid for renting going towards the purchase of the instrument.
